Brrrr! Why So Cold?

Its Not The Weather…

It was a February team-building retreat spending a weekend at a Florida beach. Some of the team were excited for the learning opportunity, some to spend time in sunny Florida, some resisted the idea, and some just didn’t like giving up their weekend for work. Ambrose made sure his team planned accordingly and that all the expenses, supplies, and arrangements were properly approved - no small feat in the current cost-conscious environment.

At the last minute, the word came down that no air travel would be approved. Ambrose swung into action and quickly changed all the arrangements to a mountain stay in Virginia, within driving distance.

It’s the Plans.

Emily Giffin said “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” Ok, but the story shouldn’t stop there. Our chilly friends had a great plan, it just didn’t adapt to change. Plans go wrong when left unattended, uncommunicated, or untuned.

Does your planning ensure no one is “left out in the cold” by not adapting to change?

While We’re At It

  • When does a plan become a box you must think outside of?

  • For software people - rigid application of Earned Value Management can clash with Agile’s incremental development of what value is.

  • Local plans are easier to adapt so Think Global, Act Local. Our founding fathers limited the Federal Government with the tenth amendment. They knew big is clumsy.
