Crickets!

Cricket

Do You Hear That?

Dakota visited a friend, Brooklyn, who lived in the city with the same name. Dakota was aware of how different the sounds and smells of the busy city street were from his modest farm in the country.

“Oh listen” Dakota said to Brooklyn with a smile as they walked down the busy street, “Do you hear the cricket?”

Brooklyn snorted amusement. “There is no way you are hearing a cricket!” The point was punctuated by a taxi blasting outrage at a car’s delayed reaction to the traffic light change.

Dakota reached into a jeans pocket and pulled out a half dollar and tossed it on the sidewalk where it tinkled as it bounced then rolled to a stop. Several passersby stopped and looked around for the source. Finally a man reached down and pocketed the coin before continuing on his way.

Dakota smiled at Brooklyn who, after a pause, smiled back.

Were You Listening?

  • Dakota in Brooklyn suggests you only hear things you’re listening for. Studies reveal Studies of attention support this (with some fun demos).

  • Does hearing crickets imply something? We asked him why he didn’t support the woman sports program and… crickets.”

  • Maybe you don’t hear what you don’t want to hear… Jiminy Cricket reminds us what we should be listening to.

When you hear “crickets,” can you explain the silence?
