What Purpose a Box?¶
Disposing of boxes is a new American pasttime! Last weekend, given the high number of empty boxes in my garage and low intellectual demands of breaking them down, my mind drifted to the nature of boxes as I disassembled some amazing creations.
This box housed a router. It identifies what is inside. It protects the contents from getting out. It ensures unwanted things do not get in. It was in a stack of the identical boxes at the store. It is as big as it needs to be, but no bigger. It’s thickness was decided based on the fragility of the its contents.
How Complex is Your Box?¶
Like this one, now flattened, boxes are carefully designed by very clever people to ensure good outcomes.
But when is a box too complex? And what about a box makes us admire thinking outside of it? Isn’t it a box we created?
What is your box keeping out? What is your box keeping in? Is one box for many functions actually the hobgoblin of little minds? If no one can see inside, is it causing uncertainty?
Why is there resistence to changing the box rather than having to think outside of it? It’s our box after all.

It is easy to confuse complexity with purpose
I’m not sure how we get out of this box: The U.S. Constitution can be printed on 4 pages, the FAR is ~4,000 pages, the Income Tax Code is more than 70,000 pages.
